Hollywood has a long history of creating and promoting different styles, some of which have by now become iconic.
We all know Marilyn Monroe’s white dress from the 1955 film The Seven Year Itch and Audrey Hepburn’s little black dress from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. These two are probably the most recognizable movie outfits that are considered classy even today.When it comes to swimwear, however, there are certainly quite a few figures who didn’t hesitate to show off their breath-taking bodies in a swimsuit on screen. Great design and their perfectly shaped bodies were definitely enough to make such movie scenes unforgettable.
1. Bo Derek – 10 (1979)
In Bo Derek’s career, it’s not difficult to identify the exact moment she became a global sex symbol of the late 1970s. Even her later acting success could not be attributed to her talents as much as to her astounding looks, whereupon her appearance in ‘10’ has certainly remained most memorable.
2. Carrie Fisher – Return of the Jedi (1983)
The scene where Princess Leia wears a metal bikini has certainly left quite an impression not only on the Star Wars fanatics, but on the general movie audiences. The design of the fictional slave outfit that the bikini was meant to represent is the work of a costume designer Aggie Guerard Rodgers who built it based on the drawings made by an illustrator Earle K. Bergey.
3. Elizabeth Taylor – Suddenly Last Summer (1959)
In Mankiewicz’s 1959 adaptation of a popular Tennessee Williams’ plays, one of the greatest actresses of all time revives a tragic female character who is about to be lobotomized. When in a swimsuit, however, she looks nothing like a tragic heroine whatsoever.
4. Halle Berry – Die Another Day (2002)
Although Die Another Day has never been rated as one of the best James Bond movies, one thing about it definitely remained iconic. Namely, Halle Berry’s appearance in an orange belted bikini has remained one of the top movie moments all time. People often compare this one with Ursula Andress’ appearance in Dr. No and the audience still doesn’t seem to be able to decide which one wore it better.
5. Ursula Andress – Dr. No (1962)
Similar to previously mentioned Halle Berry and a number of other megastars, Ursula Andress became a mainstream sex symbol thanks to her astonishing looks, especially the one in a white, two-piece belted bikini she wore in Dr. No. Just like not many later actors could top Sean Connery in the role of the secret agent 007, some argue that no other bikini moments were better than Ursula Andress’.
6. Pamela Anderson – Baywatch (1989)
Some actresses never get to show much of their actual talents, yet they do remain iconic figures. In case of Pamela Anderson, this is definitely due to her more than astounding appearance in Baywatch TV show, where her red one-piece suit has marked one whole Hollywood era.
7. Angelina Jolie – Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003)
Angelina Jolie’s recreation of one of the most popular female video game characters has received both negative and positive criticism. One thing that everybody seems to agree on, however, is the fact that her bikini appearance was simply breath-taking.
8. Salma Hayek – From Dusk Till Dawn (1996)
Undoubtedly, one of the most popular characters from Robert Rodriguez’ 1996 black comedy is Santanico Pandemonium incarnated by Salma Hayek. Whether it was a snake or her bikini that left the movie audience forever in love with this character of hers is up to an individual to decide. As far as I’m concerned, the awesome bikini design certainly did its part. In a recent remake, Eiza Gonzales made her Hollywood debut as Santanico Pandemonium herself, though with quite low chances of topping Salma.
9. Brigitte Bardot – The Girl in the Bikini (1952)
Even though most people know Brigitte Bardot from … And God Created Women, which was one of her most successful movies, the fact is she became a global sex symbol some time before that. In fact, the very moment after which almost anybody could recognize her as one of the most attractive women in Hollywood was her bikini appearance in The Girl in the Bikini.
10. Eva Mendes – Stuck on You (2003)
Though not quite well accepted by the audience, the Farrelly brothers’ Stuck on You had some shiny moments, one of which is – Eva Mendes in a bikini. Even in her early career, Eva was recognized for much more than her excellent body. Still, her bikini appearance in this movie at least partly determined her future career success.
Obviously, despite the changes in fashion trends and people’s personal tastes, some excellent swimsuit designs remain eternal, especially when promoted by Hollywood megastars. In the real world, however, you can just browse swimsuits online to get an insight into what is trendy. Picking the proper model then is quite easy if you’re sure about the type of style you want to have.
