If there was a list of the top five most difficult makeup looks of all time, I imagine that wearing shimmer would be pretty high on the list (right behind applying false lashes and finding a red lipstick).
But even a makeup amateur can pull off a sparkly look without heading into disco-ball territory. Just follow these simple rules:Size of Particles Matters, So Pick Wisely
Contrary to what gymnasts and Justin Bieber fans will have you believe glittery makeup can look grownup. The trick: use products with tiny flecks of shimmer. They’re more subtle and sophisticated than big chunks. Another plus: less mess!
Apply Shimmer Strategically
To avoid overdoing it, apply shimmery makeup to one feature at a time. For a pretty combo, do bright, colorful metallic lids with a pinky-nude lip gloss. If you can’t get away with full-on bold shadow at work, go with a cubicle-friendly option: trace dark brown eye pencil along your top lash lines then layer a sparkly liquid liner on top.
Use Shimmer on Your Lips

Let’s face it: most of us aren’t blessed with Angelina’s lips, but there’s a quick way to get a shimmer fix and fake fullness. Apply a creamy lipstick then dab a metallic gloss just on the center of your pout. Pair it with tons of mascara (a seductive gaze is optional).
Remember the Highlighter
One creamy highlighter can do so much for your face– and it’s fast. Smudge a little bit above your cheekbones for an instant glow, or put some underneath your brows or in the inner corner of your eyes to make them pop. Try a champagne colored highlighter if you have fair or medium skin; if your skin is dark go with copper or bronze.
Glitter Will Take It to Another Level
Holiday time seems like a great opportunity to experiment with glitter. Similarly to shimmer, glitter should be applied strategically on one area at a time to avoid overload. If you are using loose glitter eye shadows, simply putting it on your eyelids without any setting agent will cause major fallout and eye irritation. So spray your applicator brush in any makeup setting spray first, dab it into your glitter, and then apply it into your lid. Or better yet, try glitter gels instead of powders.
If glitter gel is not immediately available, you can achieve the same result with Visine and Chapstick. This makeup video tutorial by Gia Nasim demonstrates how to do it fast:
It’s also important to keep in mind that glitter makeup can often be a statement all by itself, so refrain from wearing too much accenting “bling” and other glitter accessories. Same goes for sparkly pieces of clothing or shoes.
What If Glitter Wears off?
Even if you use a setting agent, glitter eye makeup will eventually find a way to spread. So stay mindful of how your makeup is holding up. Use a setting spray on your complete look as an extra precaution. Then just dust off any loose, unruly sparkles throughout the day to keep your makeup looking chic.
